To clear Facebook's cache on Android, go to Settings → Apps → Facebook → Storage and tap Clear cache. iPhone has no clear-cache button, so delete and reinstall the Facebook app instead. On a computer, clear facebook.com's site data in your browser. None of these delete your account, posts or messages.
Applies to the Facebook app on Android and iPhone and to facebook.com as of October 2026.
What clearing the cache does (and doesn't do)
The cache is temporary copies of images, videos and pages that Facebook saves on your phone so things load faster. Over time it can grow to several gigabytes and sometimes causes glitches like old photos, a feed that won't refresh, or crashes.
- It does: free up storage and often fixes loading problems.
- It doesn't: delete your account, photos, posts, messages, friends or settings. Those live on Facebook's servers.
- You may need to: log back in after some methods (noted below), so have your password ready.
How to clear Facebook cache on Android
- Open your phone's Settings.
- Tap Apps (on some phones, Apps & notifications or Application manager).
- Find and tap Facebook.
- Tap Storage (or Storage & cache).
- Tap Clear cache.
That's it. You stay logged in. Don't tap Clear storage (also called Clear data) unless the app is still broken: that resets the app completely and logs you out.
How to clear Facebook cache on iPhone
iPhone doesn't let you clear one app's cache on its own. You have two options.
Option 1: Delete and reinstall the app (clears everything)
- Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
- Tap Facebook. You'll see how much space Documents & Data is using; that's mostly cache.
- Tap Delete App, then confirm.
- Reinstall Facebook from the App Store and log back in.
Skip Offload App. It removes the app but keeps its documents and data, so the cache comes straight back when you reinstall.
Option 2: Clear the in-app browser only (no reinstall)
- In the Facebook app, tap Menu (your profile picture).
- Tap Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Scroll to Browser and tap it.
- Tap Clear next to your browsing data.
This only clears cookies and cache from links you opened inside Facebook. It won't shrink the main app much, but it's useful if a website keeps acting up inside Facebook. The same Browser setting works on Android too.
How to clear Facebook cache on a computer
On a computer, Facebook's cache is stored by your web browser. Clear just facebook.com's data so you don't log out of every other site:
- Chrome or Edge: on facebook.com, click the icon to the left of the web address, open Site settings, then choose Delete data.
- Safari (Mac): Safari → Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data, search for facebook, then Remove.
- Firefox: on facebook.com, click the padlock, then Clear cookies and site data.
You'll be logged out of Facebook in that browser, so sign back in afterwards.
How to clear Facebook's cache for a shared link
If you share a link and Facebook shows an old picture or title, that's Facebook's link-preview cache, not your phone. To refresh it:
- Open Facebook's Sharing Debugger and log in.
- Paste the link and click Debug.
- Click Scrape Again. Facebook fetches the page fresh and updates the preview.
If the picture still doesn't change, the website itself may be missing a share image, which only its owner can fix.
Still slow or glitchy after clearing?
- Update the Facebook app from the Play Store or App Store.
- Restart your phone.
- Check you have free storage; a nearly full phone slows every app down.
- On Android, as a last resort, use Clear storage and log back in.
Skip "cache cleaner" apps. Android and iPhone already have everything you need, and many cleaner apps ask for permissions they don't need.
FAQ
Will clearing Facebook cache delete my messages or photos?
No. Your messages, photos and posts are stored on Facebook's servers. Clearing the cache only removes temporary copies on your device.
How often should I clear Facebook's cache?
Only when the app is using a lot of storage or misbehaving. There's no need to do it on a schedule; Facebook rebuilds the cache as you use it.
Does clearing cache log me out of Facebook?
Clearing cache on Android doesn't. Deleting the app on iPhone, using Clear storage on Android, or clearing site data in a browser does, so have your password ready.
